Sponhuset café is located in the middle of the idyllic 10 km costal Lade trail, northeast of Trondheim city center. The trail is very popular amongst locals and visitors of all ages, for walks, runs or bike rides. Along the trail you will also find the most popular beaches in Trondheim.
Sponhuset was originally a part of the nearby Ringve Manor, then called Strandheim (Beach Home). At the end of the 1800s the property was sold to Dr. Carl Hartmann. After changing hands many times throughout the century, in 1999 the picturesque Sponhuset was made into a café. Parts of the original interior, like the dining room, the cabinets, the fireplace and the ceiling have been well preserved, adding to the charm of the house.
In the soulful and cozy café, both sweet and savoury treats are on offer – like cakes, sandwiches and waffles. In the summer time simple lunch dishes, like their famous vegetable soup, is served. At Sponhuset waffle making is an art form and a passion, and their waffles have been referred to as the worlds best.
The name Sponhuset refers to the hand cleaved shavings used as cladding for the house, of which it is the only one of its kind in the Trondheim area. The house with its unique design and the beautiful surroundings make it the perfect spot for leisure and a spot of fresh sea air.
