world fair 1893 – the norway building

Thamspaviljongen

Around the world and back again

The Norway Building

Don’t miss the Thamspaviljongen, located on the Bårdshaug Plateau at Bårdshaug Herregård. The pavilion was designed as a stave church and used as Norway’s pavilion at the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. The Norway Building marketed Norway and Norway’s stave church style in the United States for 123 years. In 2017, the building was brought back to Orkanger and opened to the public after a fantastic effort by impassioned local residents in the Orkdal. They dismantled the building, took it home, restored and rebuilt it. The pavilion was built as a prestige project at the family business at Strandheim Brug in Orkanger, led by none other than Christian Thams.

Events and group guiding in the summer months on request.
