The Northernmost energy positive building

Powerhouse Brattørkaia

Sustainable

Form + Function

Have you noticed the remarkable building behind Trondheim Central Station with the large gold atrium?

Powerhouse Brattørkaia was finished in 2019 and became the world’s Northernmost energy positive building. This ambitious building project stretched the limits of what is possible and ended up changing the standards for commercial buildings of the future.

The building is not just a zero emissions building, it is also producing more energy than it uses! Powerhouse Brattørkaia will produce more energy than was used in its construction, including the production of the building materials used. This is possible largely due to the 3000 square meters of solar panels on the roof of the building.

The excess energy produced is used to power the city’s electric buses as well as providing the neighbouring buildings with electricity.

In the middle of the circular building there is a small park, a green lung in the middle of the city. From here you can look up into the office spaces and further into the sky above. This part of the building is open to the public. To get there you cross the pedestrian bridge from the train statin that leads you directly into the park entrance.

Powerhouse Brattørkaia is proof that iconic and ground-breaking architecture can go hand in hand with sustainability and the environment.
