Middle age stone church

Church of Our Lady

Vår Frue Kirke

Located in the heart of Trondheim, the church is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. Today the church has a diverse range of responsibilities, regularly holding services and functioning as a shelter for the city’s less fortunate population. Vår Frue Kirke, or The Church of Our Lady, is one of the oldest structures in the city. It was devoted to the Virgin Mary in the middle ages, and the tower and the western part of the building was erected in the 1600 and 1700s. The oldest part of the church is its eastern half, which dates back to the original medieval structure from the 1100s. Today, the Church City Mission runs the church as an “open church” on behalf of Nidaros Cathedral and the Our Lady ministry. The church functions as a place to light a candle, to pray, to socialise, to get a cup of coffee or tea, and as a place of shelter.
