Winter Hiking in Trondheim
While most Norwegians prioritise skiing in the winter and see hiking as a summer and fall activity, many outdoor enthusiasts love to head into the woods and take in the fresh, crisp air of winter. In Trondheim, there is a vast network of trails criss-crossing the area of Bymarka which is situated within walking distance from the city! Many trails are accessible on foot year round. Below we have picked out some of our favorite trails for you to explore.

Bymarka Hiking Trails
A few things to keep in mind:
- With an extensive network of cross-country ski trails spanning Bymarka, you have to be mindful of not walking in those ski trails or you might become roadkill!
- Be aware that a lot of snow can accumulate in the hills and forests of Trondheim in the winter, even if the city center is snow free, and while some paths and roads will be maintained, most paths will not.
- Always check the weather forecast before heading out. The weather in Trondheim can change quickly so always be prepared for weather changes and temperature drops.
- As daylight is scarce during the winter months in Trondheim, if you are a late starter, make sure you bring a headlamp (Clas Ohlson has affordable headlamps, otherwise most sporting good stores supply them.)
- Be aware that most trails are not wheelchair and pram accessible in the winter.
